Psoriasis areas
As there are various types of psoriasis, there are many areas of the body that can be affected. Let’s explore the different areas from head to toe.
Psoriasis of the scalp
The scalp is a common location for psoriasis, as 50-80% of people with psoriasis will eventually see their scalp affected. But it’s also a particularly delicate area to treat.
So much so that it is sometimes referred to as a "bastion area".
"Delicate"? Don't worry. There are effective treatments that can act on the inflammation and quickly reduce the itching.
Psoriasis of the face
Because it affects the most visible part of our body, facial psoriasis can be very difficult to live with. Although it’s not very common and affects children more often (eyelids and lips) than adults (forehead, eyebrows and nose), it has a social and aesthetic impact on patients. No need to worry. Effective solutions exist. Gentle facial cleansing, moisturising, make-up... we tell you everything.
Psoriasis of the hands and feet
Since it affects the palms of the hands and/or the soles of the feet, palmoplantar psoriasis may seem less restrictive in everyday life. But it hides its true nature. The lesions located in these areas are dry, inflammatory and cause cracks. This makes manual activities or walking difficult. Here again, there are effective treatments. With a little patience (because the skin in these areas is thicker), hygiene and appropriate treatments, you can conquer them.
PSORIASIS OF THE NAILS
When you are told that psoriasis can affect any part of the body, here is an unexpected one: the nails. And yet, about 80-90% of patients will develop a nail condition in their lifetime that has nothing to do with hand psoriasis. A specific treatment must therefore be put in place.
Areas of friction
There are areas more specifically affected by psoriasis: those exposed to friction (elbows, knees, lower back, etc.). By choosing the right clothes and letting your treatment work, your plaques will soon be a distant memory.
FRIENDLY (AND EXPERT) ADVICE
Beware of Koebner's Phenomenon
As you know, it’s best not to traumatise skin affected by psoriasis. There is a surprising reason for this, known as Koebner's Phenomenon. This is the appearance and development of new lesions on healthy skin that has just undergone trauma such as rubbing, scratching, tight clothing, sunburn... Therefore we have one piece of advice: pamper your skin.
Psoriasis: the intimate areas too
Our private parts are not immune to psoriasis. A taboo phenomenon... but a frequent one. It can cause burning and can easily be confused with a fungal infection. Here again, rest assured, the symptoms can easily be treated, thanks in particular to appropriate care and gentle hygiene.
Psoriasis: multiple affected areas at the same time?
One question remains: can different areas be affected by psoriasis at the same time? This is possible because psoriasis rarely occurs in isolation. A person may well have more than one form of psoriasis at the same time, or have different forms of psoriasis at different times.
OUR ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS
Psoriasis: To sort the true from the false: that's what we're here for.
It’s true that household products can be irritating. If you have to do the dishes or clean, wear protective cotton-lined gloves (available at pharmacies) to avoid rubbing and sweating.
The simple act of waxing can indeed trigger a proliferation of plaques. Irritation can lead to the Koebner phenomenon. In addition, hot and cold waxes cause the skin to undergo a change in temperature. And pulling out the hair is even more aggressive. A gentle shave is therefore preferable.
There is no single answer. While some patients describe their genital psoriasis worsening with condom use, others explain that condoms make intercourse easier by reducing frictional trauma.
