Recognising dry skin on the face

The skin of the face is very unique in many ways.

It is important to remember that dry skin results from a lack of lipids. And because the face is particularly rich in lipids, it is the first to exhibit the effects of dry skin such as feelings of tightness and visible redness.

But that's not all: the skin on the face is especially thin and is also constantly exposed to external influences. Not to mention certain areas, such as the eyes or lips, which are more sensitive.

Dry skin therefore means skin that lacks radiance, has a tighter texture and loses its feeling of elasticity... So, every morning, it's the same story. The skin on your face feels tight, it is more sensitive and less soft. You can see that your complexion is duller. Sometimes there is visible redness due to the dryness.

Fortunately, there are solutions to deal with all these discomforts.

How do you nourish the skin on your face?

Don't confuse dry skin with dehydrated skin! While the latter needs water, dry skin requires lipids, or oils, first and foremost.

Cleanse your skin morning and night with a gentle, soothing, non-drying makeup remover that you apply with your fingertips. For extra softness, remove it with a reusable cotton pad soaked in Avene Thermal Water.

Step two: protect and nourish your skin. It actually needs comfort. Choose a nourishing cream with a melting texture in the morning and evening. Why also "at night"? Your skin renews itself better at night and is not exposed to external aggressions, so it will be nourished longer during the night, and in the morning it will be smoother and more radiant. Plumping: it quickly restores suppleness and radiance. And in the case of very dry skin, a Cold Cream, applied as part of your evening skin care routine can provide comfort to dry skin.

Finally, especially in winter, certain parts of your face are put to the test. This is the case for the lips. Don't forget to nourish them too with a dedicated lip product.

I have had dry skin since I was a child and I know that if I stop using cream my skin immediately feels tight.

Factors that aggravate dry skin on the face

Besides genetic predisposition or age, there are external factors that you can do something about.

Environmental causes

The effects of dry skin are more frequent when air is cold and dry. This is why winter is when this dryness is worst. And don't forget that in summer, UV rays can accelerate skin aging and dryness: operation sun protection. Whatever the season, adapt your skin care: in winter, go for the rich texture. In the summer, you’ll prefer fluid textures like the emulsions that are lighter for the skin when it is hot.

Unsuitable hygiene products.

Overly aggressive skin care – such as certain soaps – can dry and irritate your skin. It is important to use gentle hygiene products that are suitable for dry skin and should be used as a milk or gel lotion to gently cleanse the face.

FRIENDLY (AND EXPERT) ADVICE

Can I apply make-up on my dry skin?

The good news is that if your skin is mildly dry, make-up will last quite well. But if you have very dry skin, that's when things get tricky.

For easier application, start with a nourishing day cream. It allows the pigments to adhere easily to the makeup.

If you have light spots, go for a fluid foundation texture. If it is severe, choose a compact complexion cream with a comfort texture.

For a quicker application, apply foundation with fingers. To avoid your make-up flaking, use a sponge. And for more lightness, opt for the brush.

Don't skip exfoliation

Myth #1: If you have dry and sensitive skin, you may think that exfoliating products should be avoided because they will further dry out your skin.

Why is this a mistake? An exfoliating scrub for sensitive skin once a week will get rid of the dead skin cells remaining on the surface of the skin and gently exfoliate and restore radiance. For even better results, don't hesitate to use this scrub with a nourishing mask.
