Dry or dehydrated skin: how can you recognise them?

Do you think that dry skin and dehydrated skin are the same thing? While the two terms may indeed appear to be synonymous (and the signs may seem identical), they cover two very different realities. Knowing how to differentiate between them is the best way to adopt the appropriate measures and products. Here are some tips on how to tell them apart.

Does your skin constantly feel tight? It seems rough? It is undoubtedly dry.

Dry skin is a skin type, like oily skin. This is not a temporary state, but a permanent concern.

The reason? A lack of lipids. As a result, the skin will lack oil (lipids) and will not be able to protect itself effectively.

Skin ageing, hormonal changes or certain skin conditions may be the cause of this and therefore of this dryness.

Unlike dry skin, dehydrated skin is not lacking in lipids but moisture. It is not a skin type but a skin concern. And unlike dry skin, it is reversible and temporary. A phenomenon that can affect all skin types: dry skin... but also oily skin.

What is the cause? Several factors can alter the skin barrier that is supposed to keep the skin well hydrated. This will cause excessive evaporation of the moisture contained in the epidermis. External factors (such as cold, harsh cosmetics, repeated use of hydroalcoholic gels, shaving, depilation, medication, etc.) but also internal factors (ageing, hormonal variations, etc.).

As a result, your skin is dull, lacks radiance and is visibly tight.

My skin is combination, it feels tight in winter. I use richer creams during this period, but my skin shines on the t-zone and is no longer comfortable.

Ask the right questions

How can you tell the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?

Dry skin

Does your skin feel tight and tingly all over your face? Can this feeling of discomfort last all day? Does your skin never glow? Does your make-up hold up perfectly? Does your skin like oily textures? Then there is every "chance" that it is dry.

Dehydrated skin

If your skin feels tight, but only momentarily and in certain areas. If you feel this discomfort, even after applying oily skincare products. If, in winter, your face appears pink and with rough patches and your complexion looks "wrinkled". And if your make-up doesn't hold up well and forms patches during the day... Your skin is probably dehydrated.

FRIENDLY (AND EXPERT) ADVICE

Is your skin dry? Nourish it!

As you can see, dry skin is malnourished and needs oil. Depending on its needs, you will have to adapt your skincare products.

If you have dry skin, after cleansing your skin, look for a rich texture (rich cream or balm). Thanks to its nutrient-rich active ingredients, it will deeply nourish your skin. This is done in the morning and evening. The action overnight will complement that of the morning. You will quickly notice that your skin will feel less and less tight...

Our tips to nourish your skin

The right way to moisturise your skin

Dehydrated skin is thirsty skin. It needs water. To moisturise it, the mistake would be to use only an oily product. Choose a soothing rehydrating product with thermal water and hyaluronic acid that will restore freshness to your skin. Quick tip, opt for a serum. Used before your skincare, it will restore its effectiveness, ideal at each change of season.
